Do I qualify for your free service?
We offer free tax preparation to households who generally make $64,000 or less. Some forms may be out of scope for our services. In general we prepare:
No! Clients who allow Gateway EITC Community Coalition to e-file their returns and take advantage of direct deposit will receive their refunds as fast as possible. Some paid preparers may make you take out a loan for your refund, so you get it faster. However, they will charge you for this service.

What should I do if I can’t find my social security card?
The Social Security Numbers (SSNs) and Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) of everyone on the return must be verified. SSNs are verified by social security cards, a Form 1099-SSA or other documents issued by the Social Security Administration. You may get a replacement card if yours is lost or stolen. An application can be completed online, by mail, or taking your documents and application to your local Social Security office.
Do you prepare prior year returns?
Yes, on a limited basis. We can usually go back 3 years. Due to high volume, you may be asked to return later in the season or after April 15 for prior year returns.
Do you prepare returns for states other than Missouri and Illinois?
Yes.
How will I receive my refund?
You may choose to receive your refund via paper check in the mail or have your refund directly deposited in your bank account. We recommend using direct deposit to get your refund as soon as possible.
When should I expect my refund?
If we e-filed your return and you requested direct deposit, you can expect your refund in 7-14 days. If we e-filed your return and you chose to receive a check via mail, you can expect your refund in 3-4 weeks.
Where’s my federal refund?
If you want to check the status of your federal tax refund, go to www.irs.gov or call
1-800-829-1954. It may take up to 21 days to receive your refund. You will need to know your social security number, filing status, and exact refund amount.
Where is my state refund?
If you want to check your Illinois state refund status, go to https://www.revenue.state.il.us/app/refund/servlet/RefundStatus or call 1-800-732-8866. You will need to know your social security number, filing status, and exact refund amount.
If you want to check your Missouri state refund status, go to www.dor.mo.gov or call
1-573-526-8299. You will need to know your social security number, filing status, and exact refund amount.
Do I need to have my W-2, or can I file with a pay stub?
You must have your W-2 to file. We cannot guarantee your taxes will be accurate without your W-2.
What should I do if I don’t receive a W-2 from my employer?
Contact your employer. Ask your employer (or former employer) for a copy. Be sure they have your correct address.
Or call the IRS. If you are unable to get a copy from your employer, you may call the IRS at 800-829-1040 after Feb. 23. The IRS will send a letter to your employer on your behalf. You’ll need the following when you call:
I received a 1095-A, what do I need to do?
If you purchased health insurance through the Marketplace, you will receive a Form 1095-A. We will need this form to prepare your return.
Where can I get a copy of my tax return?
If your tax return was prepared by Gateway EITC Community Coalition, you may call our office at 314-539-4062 to request a copy. If your return was not prepared by Gateway EITC Community Coalition, or you need a copy of a return done for an earlier tax year, you can request a transcript or a photocopy of your return from the IRS using form 4506-T. Please note that this transcript does not include state withholding taxes, and you will have to pay for the photocopy.
